As expected, some of the early announcements have already filtered out of Oshkosh. There have been some pretty exciting things coming out so far. There are a handful of them that I’ve come across that are personally very exciting. The Sonex Onex, the Cobalt 50, and the TV series The Aviators.
At its most basic, the Onex is a single place Sonex with foldable wings. I have been following its development for a little while now, and I have to say I’m very excited about it. Like the standard two place Sonex, it will be aerobatic. Additionally, it is projected to bring costs down even more from the already low $26,000. This is very exciting to me, because it would allow for an affordable aerobatic aircraft that is quick to build and can be easily stored off airport. The following video is from the recent roll-out at Wittman Field in Oshkosh.
Another announcement, which I find intriguing, is that of the Cobalt 50. It is a v-tailed, pusher-prop, composite aircraft. The company recently announced the aircraft via the internet and I encountered it from a series of pseudo-cryptic adverts. The five-seat aircraft is interesting to say the least and with a proposed price-point similar to a Cirrus or Corvalis, it could prove quite popular. The following video by AVWeb hits the high points.
Finally, I’m really looking forward to a decent aviation related TV show. TV is desperately short of scheduled aviation programming. A new show called The Aviators seeks to remedy that and has been picked up in the US by PBS. Check with your local PBS affiliate for more information. If you don’t want to wait, the producers announced a special for Airventure that offers their monthly magazine and downloads of full episodes for $19.95. You can add a copy of the first season DVDs for an additional $10 shipping and handling. That’s a lot of content for 30 bucks, but it is only good through the end of Airventure. The following is one of the trailers:
Finally a real aviation show. This, combined with the movie “A Pilots Story” should give General Aviation some much needed positive press.
I totally agree. I’m really looking forward to both.
